Another James Tillet Porter was born November 21, 1842 in Alabama and died July 10, 1933 in Winn Parish, Lousiana. His sister Elizabeth was born in 1840 South Carolina, so his parents seem to have moved to Alabama from South Carolina between 1840 and 1842. Between 1755 and 1775, some of his Porter ancestors seem to have moved from Lancaster County, Virginia to Union County, which is adjacent to Cherokee County, South Carolina. His great great great great great grandfather Edward Porter was born in 1630 in England and probably moved to Westmoreland County, Virginia, where one of his children was born in 1660.
I base the above assumptions on the following information, most of which was obtained from http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/4693/porter.html:
James Tillet Porter (1842-1933) was a descendant of Edward
Porter, who was born in 1630 in England.
Edward Porter's son Thomas Porter was born in 1660 in
Westmoreland County, Virginia.
Thomas Porter's son John Porter was born 1695 in Lancaster
County, Virginia.
John Porter's son Edward Sanders Porter was born in 1720 in
Lancaster County, Virginia and died in 1791 in Union Co., South
Carolina.
Edward Sanders Porter's son Jedithan Porter was born in 1755 in
Lancaster County, Virginia and died in 1804 in Union Co., South
Carolina, and married Rhoda.
Jedithan Porter's son Elisha Porter was born in 1775 in Union
County, South Carolina and died in 1840 in Union County, South
Carolina. Elisha Porter married Miss Stark about 1799 in Union
County.
In 1843 a Jedithan Porter and a James Tillet Porter conveyed land to a Mr. Farr.
Elisha Porter's son William E. Porter (the father of this James
Tillet Porter) was born in South Carolina and died after 1870 in
Winn Parish, Lousiana. He married Lucy Bevill about 1840 in South
Carolina. Lucy Bevill was born June 11, 1819 in South Carolina
and died after 1870 in Winn Parish, Lousiana.
