Porter REUNION

May 16, 1998 from HDP020537@aol.com
Subject: James Tillet Porter and Margaret Vincent

I found your stewart and martin page genealogy very very interesting. My G grandfather and G Grandmother were James Tillet and Margaret Porter. I visited their graves today at Nazareth Baptist Church out from Blacksburg SC.

I am unable to understand your links from Bea Martin through Margaret Vincent. Can you give me a better outline. Also elaborate as much as possible regarding tillet and Eugene Porter. Also I can share information about Tillet and wife Margrett Porter.

Hope to hear from you.

Subject: Porter genealogy

Dear Cousin Hershell Porter,

Thank you for your kind email messages, which I have long been hoping to have the time to reply to.

I was told that Beatrice Rose MARTIN was the daughter of Israel M. MARTIN (5/27/1889-10/24/1915) and "Nettie" Martha Ellen DAVIS (10/7/1898 in Blacksburg-8/2/1930), that John Washington MARTIN (11/2/1860-1/2/1930) and CHOCTAW Indian descendant Eugene PORTER (12/1/1857 in Union County-7/3/1921) were Beatrice Rose MARTIN's grandparents, and that James Tillet Porter and his wife Margaret Vincent were Beatrice Rose MARTIN's great-grandparents.

Wondering if there might be an error, I remember asking someone long ago if James Tillet Porter's daughter was indeed named Eugene, and was told that girls were named Eugene also. What do you think?

I have researched my father's genealogy almost exclusively. Most of my information about my mother's side of our family was given to me during a few hours one day long ago by a Mormon relative named Poole whose husband was a dentist, and consists of little more than names and dates. Do you know that Poole family?

My mother told me most of what little else I know about her ancestry.

I do not know how reliable her information is since I never examined whatever documentation she may have had.

Therefore I am very interested and eager to receive whatever information you are willing to provide to me.

Sincerely,

Stewart

Your tree if very interesting as my Great Grantparents are the same names.

Both James Tillet Porter and Margrett Vincent are buried at Nazareth Baptist church in Blacksburg, Cherokee county SC. I own some of the old Porter property there. Can you provide any other information such as your sources. I didn't know about their daughter Eugene(eugenia?) but their son Joseph V was my grandfather.

Do you have anything to share??

Based on the response from Stewart it may be that Elzie Porter could be correct in his statement associating Tillet with the Cherokees. Food for thought.

I didn't quite understand the directions frank porter was referring to when in his letter to you earlier today. Are you for directions to Tillet's porters burial place?

The marker has tillet's dates (1791-1893) making him 103. This is somewhat contrary to the census records. With enough people searching I thing we will discover lots more about him.

Great to hear from you and look forward to meeting you in Blacksburg SC on Sunday June 28. My uncle James Porter set the time to begin eating at 1:30 PM . If it is the same as in the past it will be very informal; just good country folks. I live in Charlotte Nc about 40 Miles north of Blacksburg Sc. A cousin Paul Porter is flying down from Kansas City Mo.

Directions: Follow I-85 to the Blacksburg SC Exit very near the NC border. (the 1 stoplight town is one mile off I-85). The road through Blacksburg is Hwy 29. At the stoplight go south (on Hwy 29) about 4 blocks and turn left(east) at Broad River Baptist Church. Follow this road about 3 miles and bear right at the fork (99 island road). Go about 1 mile to Porter road on left then about 1/4 mile to old old house on right. You might notice that My uncle has had the timber cut.

My phone number till noon on sunday is 704 399-9838 if you need to call.

I will probably send you another message this week.

Cousin Stewart,

Your web page is great and it can be expanded greatly as I have over 400 people under Tillet Porter mostly under his son Joseph V. I do not know computers very well or I would send a file to you. All my information is on Family Tree Maker. For the reunion this Sunday I will have a printout of the entire family tree for you if it would be helpful.

I would have sent you a map but didn't know how.

I have a 1843 deed where Jedithan and Tillet Porter conveyed some land to a Mr. Farr. Based on birth dates Jedithan may be Tillet's dad or brother plus Jedithan identified his wife a Margaret which is strange since Tillet also was married to a Margaret.

Good to hear from you and I hope with the help of Frank Porter and others we may make some accurate links. Again you web page will hopefully get some good response.

Cuz Stewart:

My pleasure to meet you this past Sunday. I hope it was as meaningful to you as it was to me. Thanks for your insightful comments to all your relatives.

I hope that at a convenient time Frank and I can visit you. Have you been to the new archive center there on Parklane Dr.? I think it intersects with I-77.

I believe there can be a lot learned about the Porters, Martins, etc. through research of deeds, wills, deaths, and marriages etc. Somehow we must learn of more links to Tillet.

Yesterday my cousin and I went back down to Blacksburg (from Charlotte). He met with a paralegal for some personal land records search. In the meantime I went to visit Curtis Martin whom I personal knew years ago and talked with recently by phone. He said he had done a lot of work on the Martin genalogy and links with the Porters. In my visit to his home I was disappointed that he was not at home. I plan to call him on the phone.

He may have a computer but I somewhat have my doubts. Anyway if you have any thoughts give me a holler.
